“Where did the name Meehanovitch come from?”
Back in 2000, when David A. Meehan was deployed to Okinawa Japan
as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marines, he was organizing the shipping containers for his Armory assets to prepare
them for transport on ship. One of his co-workers known as “M-16”
due to the fact that his last name started with the letter “M” and had 16 letters in it, was jeering on how Dave’s
last name was not accurate in defining his heritage. Dave having been born to
a Russian-Jewish mother and an Irish-Italian father looked Irish and had an Irish last name.
Not to mention the name was too short for M16’s liking… thus he mockingly “Russianized”
Dave’s last name by calling him Meehan-“ovitch” to give it that missing flare. Over the years the two Marines remained best friends even long after their time in the same unit ended
and they served under separate commands. Every once in a while, in conversation
between the two friends, the nick name Meehanovitch came out. Initially it sounded
silly and sarcastic. But after a while it kind of grew on Dave. It had a commanding ring to it, and Dave put in some time in researching if there was ever such a name
in existence. Having found no written record of that word, Dave decided that
when he started his own business some day he would use that name. Hence the creation
of “Meehanovitch Precision Customs.”
To this day “M-16” claims he owns a 5% royalty on using this invented nick-name. However, since Dave is in fact born with Jewish blood, details are in the works as to whether or not he
will pay anything for what was initially intended to be an insult.
